World Cup 2026

World Cup 2026 Groups Guide: The Toughest and Easiest Draws

For the first time, the World Cup features 12 groups of four, labelled A through L. The top two from each group, plus the eight best third-placed teams, advance to a new round of 32. That format rewards a fast start — even one strong result can be enough to go through.

How qualification works

With 48 teams and 12 groups, finishing third is no longer fatal. Eight of the twelve third-placed sides progress, which keeps more teams alive deeper into the group stage and raises the stakes of every goal difference swing.

Reading the draw

Some groups are clearly weighted toward one heavyweight and three sides scrapping for second. Others are genuine “groups of death” where two strong nations risk eliminating each other. The presence of a host nation — the USA, Canada or Mexico — also shapes the atmosphere and the path.

What to look for

  • Top seeds with a soft draw can rest players and arrive fresh in the knockouts.
  • Balanced groups often go to the final round of fixtures, producing the tournament’s first drama.
  • Third-place math means even a single point can decide who survives.
